Selling a fund to raise cash also ends its compounding and can trigger an exit load or a tax event. A loan against those same units is often the quieter option.
A Loan Against Mutual Funds lets you borrow against the value of your existing holdings by placing a lien on the units, instead of redeeming them. The units stay invested and continue to participate in the scheme's performance; the lender simply restricts your ability to redeem the pledged units until the loan is repaid or the lien is released.
We do not lend money ourselves. Our role is to help you approach a bank or NBFC that offers this facility, get the pledge request correctly registered with the AMC or registrar against your folios, and understand the terms before you commit — the loan-to-value the lender will offer, the interest rate, and what happens if the value of the pledged units falls.
The facility is sanctioned entirely at the lender's discretion, based on their credit policy and the eligible schemes on their approved list. Not every scheme or every AMC is accepted by every lender, and the loan-to-value differs between equity and debt schemes. We will point you to what a given lender currently accepts rather than assume it.
Every item below is execution or servicing work carried out on your instructions.
No. The loan is sanctioned and disbursed by the bank or NBFC you choose, entirely under their credit policy. We help with the pledge paperwork on the mutual fund side, not with the lending decision.
Not while the lien is in force. Pledged units are marked with the lender's lien on the folio, and the AMC will not process a redemption on those units until the lender confirms release, usually on repayment of the loan.
The lender may ask for additional units to be pledged or a partial repayment to restore their required margin, depending on their terms. This is a real risk of the facility and should be understood before you use it, not after.
No. Each lender maintains its own approved list of schemes and a loan-to-value for each, and it typically excludes small or illiquid schemes. We will check the current list against your folios before you apply.
