Reading a Scheme Information Document without panic

A Scheme Information Document runs to dozens of pages of dense legal text, and almost nobody reads it. There are five sections worth finding, and together they take about fifteen minutes.

1. Investment objective and asset allocation

This states what the scheme is trying to do and the range within which it must hold each asset class.

2. The risk-o-meter

Every scheme carries a standardised risk label ranging from low to very high. It is the single most useful item on the first page.

3. Fees and expenses

Look for the total expense ratio and the exit load structure.

4. Benchmark and performance

Read this as context, not as a prediction.

5. Redemption terms and cut-off timings

This tells you how quickly proceeds are paid and whether any lock-in applies.
